THE 918 AREA CODE "NUMBER EXHAUST"
"SPLIT" ALTERNATIVE

NOTE: If you have not already done so, familiarize yourself with the “number exhaust” issue before proceeding further. Click here for an explanation of the number exhaust issue as it impacts the 918 area code.

An Area Code “Split” would take the present geographic region served by the 918 area code and split it into two parts. One would keep the 918 area code, the other would get a new area code. Seven digit local dialing would be retained within each area code, as it is dialed today. Long distance calls, including, dialing across area code boundaries will be 1 + 10 digits (1 + [3 digit area code] + 7 digit number). This has already occurred in Oklahoma, when the 405 area code was split into two sections, one keeping the 405 area code, while the other was given the area code of 580.

That’s not known at this time. There are various factors that must be taken into account if a “split” is selected as the plan to follow. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator is responsible for selecting the new area code.

Some customers will have a new area code. Their seven digit number would remain the same. There would be no changes to the size of the area designated for local calls. If it was a local call for you before the split, it will remain a local call.
