What Is Involved In A
Seismic Survey?

A seismic survey is done for the purpose of exploring the subsurface for oil and/or natural gas. Seismic exploration can be done either by drilling holes and detonating underground charges or by using surface energy sources such thumpers, vibrators, weight drop equipment or hydropulse.

The sound waves that are created are sent deep into the subsurface. When they reflect back to the surface, they are captured by geophones and recorded by a computer.

An image of the subsurface, called a seismic profile, is created. This profile allows geologists to predict where oil and natural gas deposits may be located.

What Do The Rules Provide For?

Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC) requirements or seismic operations are found in Rule OAC 165:10-7-31. The rule requires seismic companies to do the following before commencing any seismic operations:

  • Register with the OCC
  • Post a Surety Bond with the OCC to be used in the event shot holes or source points are not properly plugged.
  • Provide the OCC with the names of the contractor(s) responsible for operations in the field.
  • Obtain a permit from the OCC for each seismic operation.
  • Notify surface owners by mail, including a copy of the permit or lease, at least 15 days prior to commencing seismic operations.

What Environmental Safeguards Are There?

OCC rules address environmental protection from seismic operations as follows:

  • Seismic shot holes are required to be plugged within 30 days after completion of a seismic operation to prevent groundwater contamination.
  • No seismic shot hole blasting may be conducted within 200 feet of any habitable dwelling, building or water well without the owners written permission.

What Do The Rules NOT Provide For?

OCC rules do not address surface damages. Surface damages must be negotiated between companies and landowners are private matters and do not involve the OCC.

What Should I Do If I Have A Question, Concern Or A Complaint?

The OCC will be glad to discuss with you any questions or concerns you may have. If you question involves OCC Rules on Seismic Operations or the state statute, you should contact the Consumer Services Divisions Oil and Gas Complaints and Information Department at (800) 522-0034 or (405) 521-2613.

If you have an environmental concern or would like to file a complaint against a person, firm, or corporation conducting seismic operations, you should either contact the OCC District Office or the Oklahoma City Office at (405) 521-2302.

For reporting a complaint after regular office hours, a list of Field Inspectors and their pager numbers is available by clicking the office name on the interactive map or by clicking the District link in the table above.
